(Reuters photo)A five-day series of meetings kicked off in Manila Sunday at which representatives from over 30 countries are eyeing to craft new tuna conservation measures in the western and central parts of the Pacific Ocean. The 14th regular session of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission was formally opened at the Philippine International Convention Center, with an estimated 700 delegates in attendance. "There will be an outcome document that captures all the decisions that the commission will make over the next five days," the commission's executive director, Feleti Teo, said, noting that this will include the new conservation measures. In 2016, about 2.8 million metric tonnes of tuna came from the western and central Pacific Ocean, accounting for 56% of the total global tuna catch that year.
